Football...Calcio

walker-field
Walker Field, Broad St., Liberia

The picture above shows the first field I played football when In was growing up in my native home, Liberia. There is no grass on the pitch because we played soccer there from morning till dark... We left school during our lunch break just to play football on this field... Even today as the picture shows, kids still play there and whenever there is game, it causes traffic jam on the major street (Broad St.) due to people squeezing up just to watch the game. Liberians love football!!!

I am a great sports lover. I love football and basketball mostly. I did play up to college level in football but had to forgo the game and concentrate more on Academics. Most of my buddies that played along with me never made it to University. Today, many of them are regretting the situation as there is no proper sports program in liberia to develop the young talents.

I am a great fan of the Lone Star Football team which is the national team of my country. I never missed a football match at SKD sports Complex while I was in Liberia. I remember going to the stadium 11:30am for most games. The fun to it was that we would gather opposite the stadium in the small booths to drink Club Beer and Guinness Stout and talk about girls, daily lives and football till the game time around 16:30GMT.

My local club in Liberia is called Invincible Eleven (the Yellow Boys)
I support JUVENTUS in Italy and was a regular visitor to the Stadio Delle Alpi in Torino to see my star player Alessandro Del Piero play when I lived in Italia.
Presently in England, I like three teams: Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.
In Spain, I love Real Madrid and also Barcelona, Valencia and Deportivo la Coruna.
I seldomly follow the French and German Leagues but I like to watch Lille, PSG and Bayern Munich play.
There are many great Football teams in Europe if you follow the Champion's League. Galatasaray, Panathinakos, FC Porto are teams to reckon with.

Liberia Soccer King

King George Oppong Manneh Weah of Liberia

George Manneh Oppong Ousman Weah was born in 1966 in Liberia. As a child he had big dreams of being a telephone operator in his hometown of Monrovia. It was a blessing for the world that particular dream did not come true. Instead, George Weah became the best soccer player in the world and one of the most inspirational human beings as well.

Nicknamed the "Lion King" and "King George" by people of Liberia, George Weah has managed to collect almost every athletic accolade that can be awarded to an international soccer player. In 1995 be became the only player in history to have ever been named the European, African and FIFA Player of the Year in the same year. He has won numerous soccer awards in his home continent but none as great as being named the African Player of the Century in 1998. This award allows him to share company with other soccer greats such as Pele who earned this honor for South America and Franz Beckenbauer, Europe's Player of the Century. He was also inducted into the FIFA Hall of Fame in 1999. He has constantly been an offensive threat on every team he has played and has brought league championships to Monaco, Paris St.-Germain, AC Milan and Chelsea.

Born and raise in Liberia, George Weah has managed to use his God given abilities to go places and acrhived what was thought to be unreachable for many Liberians. From his days with Young  Survivors in Claratown to the days of Tonnerre of Cameroom, and the world best title with AC Milan, he's always humble and very generous to family, friends and amazingly the entire country of Liberia. The amount of time and financial support he has rendered to his country is unthinkable. The world thinks he's the greastest soccer player to ever come from Africa, but I think he is the greastest role model for Liberians and he cares about his country and his people more than any other sport hero in the entire world.
