The Union of Liberian Organisations in the United Kingdom has elected its first code of officers for two years. The elections which took place in Birmingham, in the midlands of England on Saturday November 25th 2006 brought together more than ten different Liberian organisations from cities across the United Kingdom at their first Annual General Meeting. 

 

The elections took place following the adoption of the Union’s constitution and by-laws, a comprehensive document that provides inclusive and full participation of all Liberian organisations in the UK

 

The Union of Liberian Organisations is an umbrella organisation formed in July 2004 to coordinate the affairs of all Liberian community organisations and further have a cohesive and orderly representation in meeting the needs of Liberians in the UK.

 

Those elected as officers of the Executive Committee were Mr. John Nimly Brownell Chairman, Dr. George Flahn Vice Chairman, Dr. Robert Blegay Secretary General and Mr. Lesley Togbah Treasurer.  

 

Earlier, officers of the Annual General Meeting, the highest decision making body of the Union were also elected for a one year term.  Those elected were Mr. Van Richards President, Dr. Kokolu Waiwaiku Vice President, and Mrs Jacqueline Koffi Secretary.

 

Addressing the UK Liberian AGM following the elections, the President of the European Federation of Liberian Associations Mr Elvis G. Morris praised the various organisations for their efforts in forming a united front. Mr. Morris emphasized that for successive and sustainable reconstruction and development initiatives in Liberia, those in the Diaspora must remain united and work for a common goal in the interest of all Liberians.

 

Mr. Morris who flew in from Paris to attend the meeting further called on Liberians in the United Kingdom to work with donor organisations and other international organisations to redevelop the broken institutions of Liberia following fifteen years of civil conflict.

 

Also to grace the auspicious occasion was the Second Lady of the Republic of Liberia, Mrs. Katumu Yatta Boakai. Members of the Second Lady’s delegation included Dr. Mohammed Sheriff, Deputy Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ms. Edith V. McIntosh, Administrative Assistant to Mrs. Boakai and Mrs. Genevive Dorbor. Mrs. Boakai and Dr. Sheriff used the occasion to appeal to Liberian professionals especial the medical doctors to return home and contribute to the nation’s rebuilding efforts.
