Liberians in Britain

April 26,2002

A documentary on the BBC television on April 25,2002 outlined the life and tragic murder of a 10 year old Nigerian kid named Damilola Taylor who had come to Britain in search of a better life and education. The only reaction to such news is shocking and one of total disbelief. All Africans look forward to coming to Europe and the rest of Western World for better opportunities and transparent Justice that are not easily achieved in strife - Africa. The drama should unveil a lot of fresh thoughts in the minds of many brothers and sisters planning to seek greener pastures in Europe.

According to news report from the http://www.btopenworld.com, A jury at London`s Old Bailey court on Thursday acquitted two 16-year-old brothers of his murder after a huge police investigation and three-month trial costing 13 million pounds. This amount of money spent on the case leads to more questions than the results obtained from the investigation done by the British Police. Is this figure quoted to impress the world and Africans in particular that enough resources were put into the case?  Where did the money go because we didnt see any tangible results? There has got to be an inquiry into the lackadaisical handling of evidence and witnesses by the police.

This should not be seen as an attempt to stir racial tension but rather to point out the inconsistencies and conspicuous disparities in the attitude of law enforcement agencies.  The Law in this country is not blind. There was a high profile case in this country of the abduction and murder of an 8 years old little British girl named Sarah Payne. Let us attempt to make some comparison with regards to the interest shown in the both cases.  In Sarahs case, the forensic evidence (strand of hair and fibres from vehicle) exhibited by police and prosecution were crucial in the conviction of Roy Whiting but in Damilola case, the forensic evidence (glass fibre found on the accused trainers) were inadmissible. The reward to catch the schoolgirl's killer stood at £150,000 but Damiola was a meagre £50,000.  The only witness who alleged to have seen the incident had her testimony thrown out of court because the judge said she had embellished her story "from her fertile imagination". Also, the witnesses from the Feltham and Hollesley Bay young offenders institutions testimonies had no impact on the case unlike Sarahs case that didnt have material witnesses but still got results. How astonishing!!!

With the current trend of events unfolding in the developed world, I would highly advise African parents NOT to send their kids here for primary or secondary schooling. If they would not be available to train their kids themselves as a family, then it is best that they instil the basic training for their kids in Africa. Upon graduation from secondary school and after learning the family values and respect for fellow man, then I believe that said kids would have the proper tools to be able to withstand the dynamics of the developed society. Kids imitate their peers and once they see their friends swearing and misbehaving without being reprimanded, they too would surely pick up such ugly habits. Well, the end result is anybodys guess.

The high crime rate unfolding today in Europe makes it very unsafe to raise kids from different culture especially the African setting. The harsh type of African discipline (whipping by cane) and other corporal punishment given to offenders by parents and the community cannot be applied here today. Parents would be charged for child abuse and even forfeit their rights to his own child. The intentions of the laws to prohibit child abuse are good, but the extent to which it is implemented makes the European parents afraid to discipline their kids at home. Hence the child grows up without fear for anybody, not even the law. I have seen many occasions in which kids use swear words against their parents and elderly folks but absolutely nothing is done about it. The monsters causing the havoc on the streets of Britain and other cities in the developed world today were created in the homes.

Central governments are today giving all the protection to the children by enacting laws limiting the reach of parents to their kids. The reality is, what are the governments doing to discipline these kids whom they care for and protect so much? Look at the juvenile courts where the government send these young offenders for trial. The kid only has to answer his name and go to sleep for the rest of his trial while the defence and prosecution Lawyers battle it out. It has no impact on him when he hears the judge being called Your Worship, a terminology he does not understand. Upon completion of said trials, many are sent to youth institutions for rehabilitation but in most cases, they come out worse than ever before. They see these institutions as a holiday vacation resort where they get paid for tormenting and harming innocent citizens. The government is failing its tax- payers because they dont get the protection and justice for their hard earned taxes paid. Rationally thinking, why should these criminals be allowed the luxury in these prisons and institutions when they show no remorse for crimes committed and statistics have shown that majority return to even violent crimes after serving sentences.

The Schools lack teachers in this country today and teachers have to be imported from abroad simply because there is no control over the kids. Many of these teachers think that coming to work in Britain will improve their living standards but to their utmost dismay, many have opted to return to their homeland and forgo the better salaries and living conditions here. A classic example was a female teacher from South Africa who reported a student to the Principal of a London school for unruly behaviour and throwing things at her in class. The Principal gave the student a lollipop and sent the child back to class. That could never happen in an African classroom. The teachers have the responsibility to instil discipline to the children after the parents. People are afraid to go to the schools to teach these children nowadays because these kids lie on many teachers accusing them of indecent advances and sexual harassment. Latest news report from German city of Erfurt on April 26, 2002 quotes the massacre of 14 teachers, 2 female students and a police officer in a school by a student that had been expelled.

These are the people that will take on the helm of state leadership as either Members of Parliament, Government Officials and Business Executives of the private sector in the next twenty or thirty years. What would we expect other than total chaos, confusion and anarchy. The world will eventually head back to the same status quo of the early twentieth century. Arms proliferation and quest for world supremacy by various gangs will ultimately lead the world into a third Nuclear War. There are old adages that read prevention is better than cure and train up a child in the way he should grow and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

National governments should begin to take concrete and drastic actions against these young offenders so as to advert a future catastrophe because if nothing is done to remedy the current trend of violence and crimes, the good work of their hands will be destroyed and thus, an apocalypse!!!
